Consider these tips as you prepare for your interview.
1. Be prepared.
Prior to the interview, learn as much as possible about the organization or project. Visit their website and read all recent press releases. Have an understanding of the industry, their challenges and, if possible, the direction in which the organization or project is heading.
Educate yourself about the position. The interview is your chance to demonstrate that you are the best candidate for the job. The better you understand the position, the more effectively you will emphasize your relevant skills. Read your resume over before the interview to recall exactly what is on it.
Anticipate and prepare answers for likely interview questions. By anticipating questions in advance, your answers will come more easily.
2. Be on time.
If you are unsure of the location, make a trial run prior to your interview. On the day of your interview, be there a few minutes early to afford time to gather your thoughts and relax while waiting for the interviewer.
Bring copies of your resume, references and all other pertinent information. It is a good idea to have a few extra copies of your resume on hand in case there is more than one interviewer. As well, bring a portfolio of all other pertinent information such as copies of certifications, professional references and academic transcript.
3. During an interview...
It is important to maintain a professional demeanor during the interview. Keep the following points in mind:
- Speak clearly
- Maintain eye contact
- Be honest
- Be positive
- Don't be afraid to ask for clarification
- Ask questions
4. Afterward...
The day after the interview, contact your interviewer (by phone, email, letter) to thank him or her for taking the time to meet with you. Brief and timely thank-you letters are an excellent opportunity to show your enthusiasm and interest in the position.
In the event where a recruiter has arranged the interview for you, contact your recruiter immediately following your interview to talk things through. Your recruiter will coordinate the necessary follow-up procedures, and will coach you on post-interview etiquette.
